Neptune's Grotto

Alghero, Italy, 07041

Neptune's Grotto, located near Alghero, is a stunning stalactite cave that’s often hailed as one of the most beautiful caves in Sardinia. Discovered by fishermen in the 18th century, it has become a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors into the enchanting underworld of Capo Caccia's cliffside. Named after the Roman god of the sea, it's a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and explorers.

The basics

Tours of Neptune’s Grotto typically begin at the entrance where passenger boats dock. Visitors will see Lake La Marmora, one of Europe's largest salt lakes, adorned with rare stalactites and the imposing stalagmitic concretion called Acquasantiera. Further into the cave are the Hall of Ruins and the Royal Palace Hall, with calcitic columns. The tour continues through the Smith Hall and ends at the Tribune of Music, offering a panoramic view of the cave.

Things to know before you go

  • Unfortunately, the cave is not wheelchair accessible or suitable for travelers with limited mobility.

  • In bad weather, tours of the grotto are sometimes canceled for safety.

  • Bathroom facilities are next to the ticket office.

  • It’s advisable to bring bottled water with you and to wear comfortable footwear—ideally hiking boots.

How to get there

There are several ways to reach Neptune's Cave. Boat tours departing from Alghero's harbor or Cala Dragunara in Porto Conte Park offer a scenic approach, and are the best choice for families. For an adventurous route, you can descend the 654-step stairway from the Capo Caccia parking lot, providing outstanding views along the way. Public transportation options include a daily ARST bus departing from Via Catalogna in Alghero.

When to get there

To avoid crowds, it’s best to visit Neptune's Cave outside of the peak summer months. The cave is typically open every day from morning to early evening, with guided tours throughout the day. Weekdays are generally less crowded compared to the weekends, and arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon can offer a quieter experience.

Sunset views from Capo Caccia

If you’re visiting Neptune’s Cave in the late afternoon and have access to a car, then head south to Capo Caccia. This cliffside spot is renowned as a top sunset-viewing spot and offers spectacular photo opportunities. From the parking area, head off on a 30-minute hike to Grotta delle Brocche Rotte, but make sure you’re wearing sturdy shoes or hiking boots for the steep trails.
