Nya Älvsborg Fortress
Nya Älvsborgs Fästning, Västra Frölunda, Sweden, 426 76
Perched on an island at the mouth of the Gota River, Nya Älvsborg fortress was built in the 17th century to protect the city against Danish invaders. Diminutive in size, but rich in history; the sea fortress remains one of the best-preserved in Sweden and boasts a storied past filled with battles, sieges, and bombardments.
The basics
Nya Älvsborg fortress can be reached only by boat; sightseeing cruises set sail from the Port of Gothenburg. After cruising the Gota River and admiring the star-shaped fortress from the water, head ashore to explore the medieval ruins.
Guided walking tours are hosted by costumed guides, dressed up as historic figures such as King Christian IV of Denmark and Admiral Peder Tordenskiöld. Visit the square tower and chapel, peek into the 19th-century prison cells, and hear about the castle’s history, from the battles of the Great Nordic War to its use as a storage facility during WWI.
