Parque Colón de Granada
Granada, Andalucia
Parque Colón de Granada is at the center of the city—both physically and culturally. On any given day, you’ll find the plaza bustling with vendors selling souvenirs, musicians playing marimba music, and families hanging out on shaded benches. It’s also where you’ll find the entrance to the bright yellow Granada Cathedral, one of the most photographed churches in Nicaragua.
The basics
Thanks to its central location, Parque Colón is hard to miss. Walk the perimeter—camera in hand—to take in the surrounding Spanish-colonial architecture, or sit back and have a snack of vigorón, a popular street food made with yuca, cabbage, and chicharrones. Though you can visit the plaza on your own, a guided tour will teach you more about its history and significance.
Things to know before you go
- Free and open to the public, Parque Colón is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.
- There are lots of nearby options for food and drinks, including street-food vendors and sit-down restaurants.
- Though the plaza is open all night, use caution if you plan to stay after dark.
- There are no restroom facilities in the park.
How to get there
Parque Colón is hard to miss. It’s located in the heart of the historic district between Calle La Libertad and Calle Real Xalteva, about a 5-minute walk southeast from ChocoMuseo or east from Iglesia de la Merced. If you’re coming from the outskirts of the city, the best way to go is by taxi.
When to get there
To avoid the midday heat, plan to visit in the cooler mornings or evenings. Though it’s always lively, the plaza can get extra crowded on weekends—especially Sundays when families file out of the nearby churches to eat, shop, and socialize. Visit in the evening to admire the church lights, but be cautious of your surroundings if you stay late.
A plaza at the center of it all
Not only is Parque Colón at the entrance to the famous Granada Cathedral, but it’s also centrally located in Granada’s historic quarter. Start your day at the park and walk around the area to other nearby Granada points of interest, such as Calle La Calzada, ChocoMuseo, and Mercado Municipal.
