Qinghai Lake (Lake Kokonor)

Xining, China

One of China’s biggest lakes, Qinghai Lake (Lake Kokonor) is impressively surrounded by white-capped mountains, with horses, yaks, and Tibetan, Mongolian, and Muslim culture all around you. People make the journey to enjoy the natural beauty, ride horses, cycle, and hike. The area is also known for birdwatching, so bring some binoculars, and make sure your cameras are ready for action.

The basics

Booking an organized tour or your own private car and driver are great options for going out to Qinghai Lake—this way you can stop along the way for lunch and a stretch. Many multi-day tours also visit the lake, such as those following the Silk Road between Xining and Dunhuang; these tours often involve a lot of time in a vehicle, since this section of China is vast and you have to cover huge distances between attractions and historical sites. But, it’s rich in culture and history, and worth it to experience.

Things to know before you go

  • Stay hydrated, since the lake is in an arid area.

  • The lake is salty, so be ready for that if you want to take a brisk dip.

  • The altitude is about 10,500 feet (3,200 meters), so be prepared.

How to get there

There is no train out here, but there is a bus from Xining that leaves in the morning and takes around 2.5 hours. You can also opt to book a tour or a private car and driver for more flexibility. While at the lake, you can bike, hike, or ride horseback to see the surroundings.

When to get there

Aim for spring to fall to visit Qinghai Lake. In the winter, it’s gorgeous, but bitterly cold, often with negative temperatures and high winds. Just know that the first weeks of May and October are national holidays, so the lake area will be full of tourists.

Cycling around Qinghai Lake

One of the most adventurous ways to explore Qinghai Lake and take in the scenery and multicultural region is by bike. This isn’t for beginners, though, since you have to tackle the altitude. Also note there are hotels along the way, but it’s advised to bring a tent in case they’re full. For the ultimate security and support on your route, consider cycling with a professional touring company.
