Queen's Park Savannah

Port of Spain, Trinidad

Spread out over 260 acres (110 hectares), Queen's Park Savannah is the largest green space in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Once part of a sugar estate, the park today is a popular spot for picnicking, hogging, and getting a bit of fresh air. Many annual Carnival events—including King and Queen shows—are also staged in the park.

The basics

While Queen's Park Savannah is at its liveliest during the annual Carnival celebrations, it's a great place to visit year-round. Along with sprawling grassy areas and footpaths, there's an open-air food court in the evening where you can sample local treats such as doubles, dumplings, and corn soup. You can visit the food court on an evening street food tour, and most daytime tours of Port of Spain include a visit to the park.

Things to know before you go

  • The food stalls at Queen’s Park Savannah are a must-visit for food-loving travelers.

  • The park is big, with a lot of ground to cover, so it’s wise to bring water and wear comfortable shoes.

  • While much of the park is grassy, there are paved trails that are suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

Queen’s Park Savannah is directly north of downtown Port of Spain, about a 25-minute walk or 7-minute drive or taxi ride from Woodford Square. Maxi taxis to the park depart from the corner of Duke and Henry streets (Maraval route) and from the corner of Frederick and Hart streets (Cascade/St. Ann’s route).

When to get there

If you want to experience the park at its liveliest, come during the annual Carnival celebrations, which take place on the Monday and Tuesday before the start of Lent. Dates change every year, but Carnival is usually in the second half of February or in early March.

The Magnificent Seven

Just west of the park on Maraval Road are seven of the most spectacular mansions in the city, collectively dubbed the "Magnificent Seven." These structures were built in the early 20th century and include the elegant Queen's Royal College (built in the German Renaissance style), the massive Moorish Mediterranean-style Whitehall, and Stollmeyer's Castle, a Scottish Baronial house.
