Sagadi Manor (Sagadi Mois)
Sagadi, Lääne-Viru County, 45403
Sagadi Manor (Sagadi Mois) has stood in what is now Lahemaa National Park for 500 years, dating from Estonia’s Baltic-German period. Having been restored to its former glory, the manor is now open to visitors who can explore the rooms and gardens while learning about its history and admiring its romantic architecture.
The basics
There is a museum inside the manor house that displays the rooms—including a valuable collection of art and furniture—as they were when they were lived in by a noble family. The Sagadi hall is one of the best examples of noble life in those times thanks to its interior, ceiling paintings, and trophy room. There is also a forest museum housed in the former granary and carriage house, where visitors can learn about Estonian nature and the country’s diverse flora.
Things to know before you go
There is a restaurant on the estate, as well as a hotel and a hostel where you can spend the night.
Bicycles are available to rent from the hotel’s reception to explore the wider park.
Free Wi-Fi is available in the manor.
How to get there
The Sagadi Manor is located within Lahemaa National Park, which is about an hour’s drive from Tallinn. (On-site parking is free.) You can also reach the manor by public bus. From Tallinn bus station, take the bus to Päide then change for the bus to Käsmu, from where it’s around a 20-minute walk to the manor.
When to get there
The manor house and forest museum are open every day from mid-morning until early evening. The surrounding gardens and the orchard are a pleasant place for a stroll and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The restaurant is open every day from midday until late evening (later on Fridays and Saturdays).
Lahemaa National Park
It’s well worth taking the time to explore more of Lahemaa National Park, Estonia’s oldest and largest national park. The park’s diverse landscapes of sandy seashores, pine and cliff forests, bogs, and rivers present Estonia in miniature, and it’s easily accessible from Tallinn. If you don’t have your own wheels, a guided tour can get you there and show you all the highlights.
