St. George's
St. George’s Parish, St. George's
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Town of St. George is one for history lovers. This genteel little town on Bermuda’s far-eastern shores roughly marks the spot where shipwrecked Brits discovered the islands centuries ago. Today, the history-steeped streets showcase St. George’s colonial architecture, fortifications, and even pillory and stocks.
The basics
The Town of St. George sits on St. David’s Island, facing St. George’s Harbor and Ordnance Island. Bermuda tours or private day trips shine the spotlight on St. George’s history, exploring the wider St. George’s Parish with transport from your hotel. Look for East End excursions that take in landmarks such as the historic fortifications, Ordnance Island, and the Unfinished Church, along with glimpses of Tucker’s Town—where the rich and famous hang out.
Things to know before you go
Visitors looking for a less touristic town may prefer staying in St. George over Hamilton.
Bermuda isn’t generally considered wheelchair-friendly, but many St. George sidewalks are accessible with cuts at the curb. There are a few Bermuda taxi companies that offer wheelchair-accessible transport.
There are public restrooms in Kings Square (aka Town Square), which are open during the daytime.
Free Wi-Fi is limited in Bermuda, away from Hamilton. However, St. George visitors can find free Wi-Fi hotspots at the Bermuda Visitor Services Centre and some independent cafes and restaurants.
How to get there
While the town was once Bermuda’s capital, the Town of St. George is tiny and most landmarks are reachable on foot. From the Royal Naval Dockyard you can take the 45-minute Orange Route ferry from April through November. From L.F. Wade International Airport, a taxi is a good choice if you have luggage. Those traveling light can choose between airport scooter hire or any of the buses that reach St. George in around 15 minutes, luggage on the buses isn’t allowed.
When to get there
Like everywhere in Bermuda, the high season months of May through September feel livelier. But in St. George, there are some fun off-peak annual events, too. In September, the St. George Seafood Festival takes place on Ordnance Island (near St. George’s Harbour), showcasing the islands’ seafood over a festival-style weekend. During winter holidays, peek inside historic local homes when owners open them to the public for the National Trust St. George’s Walkabout.
Where to find the best churches in St. George
Two curious St. George churches are worth making time to see. The impeccably preserved St. Peter’s Church is believed to be the oldest Anglican place of worship away from the British Isles. After a few centuries of use, when St. Peter’s Church was looking run-down, the islanders began building a replacement—until they ran out of money. The roofless result became the Unfinished Church, which today is mostly used as a wedding venue.
