St. Mary Basilica

105 S Union St, Natchez, MS, 39121

The oldest Catholic cathedral still active in Mississippi, St. Mary Basilica was constructed in a Gothic Revival style in 1842 and consecrated in 1886. The basilica—formally called the Cathedral of Our Lady Sorrow—was the seat of the diocese until 1977, is listed on the National Register, and was partially restored in 2001.

The basics

St. Mary Basilica is a fully operational church that holds Catholic Mass every day of the week. Self-guided tour brochures are available in multiple languages and you’re welcome to visit the church whenever it is open. Since it’s a central landmark in Natchez, many city tours include at least a passing view of the basilica on walking tours.

Things to know before you go

  • Dress modestly when entering the church, in respect for the religious setting.

  • Refrain from visiting while Mass is in session.

  • The Natchez Trails Prayer Garden is across the street and open to the public.

  • A Confederate war memorial is located in the park behind the church.

How to get there

St. Mary Basilica is located at 105 South Union Street in downtown Natchez, along Main Street facing Natchez Memorial Park. Most visitors drive here and park on-site or walk from other city landmarks, such as Magnolia Hall or Stanton Hall. There is no bus stop locally, but taxis and rideshares are available.

When to get there

As a public place of worship, visitors are welcome to visit St. Mary Basilica any time during its operating hours. A daily Mass schedule is posted on its website; try to visit either an hour before or after Mass to ensure you’re not disrupting any services.

Explore more of Natchez’s architecture

Natchez is relatively compact, making sightseeing easy for architecture lovers. Two blocks east of St. Mary Basilica, you’ll find the former King’s Tavern, a building which dates back to 1789; The House on Ellicott’s Hill is one of the oldest buildings in the city, built between 1797 and 1801; while other sites to visit include Stanton Hall and Magnolia Hall.
