The Basics

You’re likely to amble along the Street of the Knights at some point during your exploration of Rhodes Old Town. While there are some information boards explaining the street’s history, walking tours offer a more comprehensive understanding of the role of the Knights of St. John play, a religious military order who used the island as their headquarters in the Middle Ages.

How to Get There

The Street of the Knights stretches between the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes and Our Lady of the Castle Church near the waterfront. The Avenue of the Knights is a short stroll from Mandraki Harbour and the KTEL East Side Bus Terminal.

When to Get There

The street can become busy, especially when multiple cruise ships dock in port at the same time. Go early in the day or in the evening when both the crowds and the heat die down.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

A stroll along the Avenue of the Knights leads to one of Rhodes biggest historic attractions: the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Originally built in the 14th century by the Knights of St. John, the palace later had to be rebuilt following a 19th-century explosion. It now functions as a museum that displays statues, mosaics, and antique furnishings.
