POINT OF INTEREST

Volcán Maderas

Ometepe, Nicaragua

Volcán Maderas is the smaller of the two volcanoes on Ometepe Island. But the 4,600-foot (1,400-meter) volcano certainly doesn’t feel small when you’re embarking on the challenging climb to its summit, which offers views of Lake Nicaragua, Volcán Concepción, and the jade-green crater lake that sits in the volcano’s center.

The basics

You need a guide to tackle any of the three trails leading to Volcán Maderas's crater. The most popular (and shortest) route begins at Finca Magdelena on the volcano's eastern slopes. It’s a steep climb that takes travelers of good physical fitness around four hours to complete. There are multiple viewpoints, but most of the trail is shrouded in trees and cloud forest. Look (or listen) for howler monkeys as you climb.

Things to know before you go

  • There are no shops or toilets on the way up, so come well-prepared with water, snacks, and toilet paper. Make sure you take everything you bring back with you.

  • The route to the top of the volcano is muddy year-round, so shoes with good grip and hiking poles are strongly recommended.

  • A good level of physical fitness is required for this steep climb, as there will be lots of scrabbling and climbing.

How to get there

From the port of Moyogalpa, the entry point for boats to Omotepe Island, Volcán Maderas is a 1.5-hour drive via the NIC-64 and NN-226 roads. There are a few accommodation options at the foot of the volcano that you may want to use if you’re starting early—no public transport services in this rural part of the island.

When to get there

The best time to climb Volcán Maderas—and visit the island of Omotepe and Nicaragua—is between December and March, the country’s dry season. Clear skies and sunshine also bring the crowds, but the November and April shoulder months offer cheaper accommodation prices and fewer people.

Soak aching muscles at Ojo de Agua

If you’ve completed the challenge of climbing Volcán Maderas, your muscles will surely thank you for a trip to Ojo de Agua. These crystal-clear swimming pools, surrounded by lush forest, maintain a water temperature of around 77°F (25°C), making them the ideal place to rest and relax after an adventurous climb. You’ll find facilities such as showers, changing rooms, a restaurant, and even souvenir stalls, too.
