Howard Johnson By Wyndham Clearwater Fl

This is an original Howard Johnson motel property apparently purchased by Wyndham. The motel is typical of 1970's motels. If your into nostalgia, this is your place. The room smelled, the lobby smelled. In spite of the AC, the room was humid and the smell permeated clothing and CPAP filter. The bathroom was clean as was the bed. For +200/night, it was NOT a value. Alas, this is the price that the lodging market supports for motel prices at older properties in the Clearwater area. The staff was friendly and provided friendly service. The breakfast was average and the breakfast area was staffed and clean. The quantity of menu items was not consistent through the breakfast hours. Come later in the breakfast hours and find muffins, breads, and hot items low or out. The muffins appeared to have been refrigerated which leads me to assume that they were not fresh daily. The pool was clean and attractive. The property location is just off a frontage road that parallels a divided highway. The AC noise masked road noise. The pool area had two cutout squares that were filled with what looked like lava rock. The uneven surface was a trip and fall hazard. Next time when looking for lodging in Clearwater, I'll be a better consumer and choose a better property a little further out and trade distance for price and quality. This property damages the Wyndham brand which will effect my future lodging choices.
