A downtown classic, this hotel is just steps from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and Newark Penn Station, where you can get easy train access to Manhattan. Rooms are clean and contemporary. Rooms here are not large, but are well-coordinated and comfortable. Originally opened in 1916 this famed property has hosted Albert Einstein and U.S. Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and John F Kennedy. Smoke free premises. 169 units. 15 stories, interior corridors. Poor customer service. No free parking. 1 working elevator at the time of our stay. It took very long to get up and down between our room and the lobby. Stairs were said to be for emergency only.

The hotel was clean. Check in was simple and staff showed professionalism. I wasn't too happy with the room having a strong smoke odor. If given a choice I would have rather non-smoking.
