Malmaison, Château de
( Highly Recommended ) The memory of Napoleon and his beloved Josephine lingers on around 'La Malmaison' and the nearby Château de Bois-Préau. Josephine bought the 17th-century castle in 1799 and had the wings and the veranda added. The couple spent several happy years in Malmaison, and after their divorce Josephine continued to live in it up until her death in 1814. In the summer of 1815, Napoleon went to La Malmaison once more before sailing for St-Helena. The castle then passed through many hands before it was bought by a banker, restored and donated to the State in 1904. It contains various collections of 18th- and 19th-century paintings (David, Greuze etc), porcelain and furniture. The Château de Bois-Préau was offered to France by a wealthy American, Edward Tuck, and now forms an annexe to the collections in La Malmaison. Address: 14km west of Paris.
