Saint-Denis, Basilique
( Do not miss )

So many great architects and artists have contributed to make the Basilique St-Denis what it is today that the building is in itself a museum of French architecture and sculpture of the medieval and Renaissance periods.
An abbey was built on the site where Saint-Denis died following his martyrdom in Montmartre. Designed in the early 12th century by Abbot Suger, the nave and transept of the abbey church were completed in the 13th century by none other than Pierre de Montreuil, who also worked on Notre-Dame. It was for centuries the burial place of the kings and queens of France as well as of illustrious Frenchmen such as Du Guesclin. There is a wealth of recumbent figures and funeral monuments dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries, most of them the work of great artists: Beauneveu (Charles V, 14th century), Philibert Delorme (François I, 16th century), Germain Pilon (Catherine de Médicis, 16th century), Jean Bullant and Il Primaticcio (16th century). The basilica underwent restoration by Gabriel in the 18th century and again by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century.
