Nestled in the historic Cumberland Valley, Chambersburg experienced three raids by Confederate troops during the Civil War. The last incursion culminated in 1864 with the burning of the city after its refusal to pay an indemnity. In Memorial Square in the historic district is the five-tiered Memorial Fountain and its statue of a Union soldier; the memorial was dedicated in 1878 to honor Civil War soldiers. Facing south, the statue symbolizes protection against future invasions. Also in Memorial Square are Central Presbyterian Church, with its Tiffany glass windows, and the Franklin County Courthouse, which was rebuilt after the fire of 1864. Learn More...
