The high desert city of Lancaster in the Antelope Valley was established in 1884 along the Southern Pacific Railroad line. The community grew through farming and mining activities. Edwards Air Force Base's predecessor, Muroc Bombing and Gunnery Range, was established in 1933 and became an important part of Lancaster's economy.
