It was gold that brought prospectors in search of their fortunes to this area in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada during California's gold rush. Although a 54-pound nugget was found nearby, the frenzy for gold eventually died down. Many miners stayed, however, establishing farms, orchards, sawmills and shops.
