After crossing the plains in a covered wagon, Ezra Meeker arrived at a site just east of what is now Tacoma and named it for the Puyallup tribe; the name means “generous people.” (The proper pronunciation is “Pew-allop.”) This homey city lies in the shadow of mighty Mount Rainier, and the Puyallup River flows through downtown.
