Stanhope dates from Revolutionary War times, when the Sussex Iron Works was a major industry. The nation's first anthracite furnace was built in town around 1821. Hopatcong State Park is on the shore of nearby Lake Hopatcong. Stanhope is at the eastern end of a scenic stretch of I-80 that runs 28 miles to the Delaware Water Gap and continues into Pennsylvania.
