Authorized to dedicate the town in honor of founder W.P. Harmon, the speaker at the naming ceremony accidentally designated the town Waverly, presumably after a Waverly novel he had read that day. Harmon did not object, and the name remained. The town has been the permanent home to Wartburg College, 100 Wartburg Blvd., since 1935.
