About AnnistonSamuel Noble and Daniel Tyler established textile mills and blast furnaces in Anniston to help launch the South into the mainstream of the Industrial Revolution after the devastating effects of the Civil War. In 1879 the owners hired several Eastern architects to build a modern company town, which opened to the public in 1883. Many historic structures from this model city remain.
West of town is Anniston Army Depot, one of the nation's largest ordnance and reclamation depots. The highest point in the state, 2,407-foot Cheaha Mountain, is south of town in Cheaha State Park.
