About BathBath, on the west bank of the Kennebec River, has been an active center of shipbuilding since the early 1600s. Nuclear naval vessels and large merchant ships are now built at Bath Iron Works. Residential sections have a number of old mansions dating from Bath's days as a major port. In the town of Woolwich, one mile east of Bath, visitors on Sunday afternoons can tour the Woolwich Historical Society Museum, which is housed in an early 19th-century home and features quilts, rugs, fabrics, home furnishings, farm equipment and tools from the 19th and early 20th centuries; phone (207) 443-4833 during the summer, or (207) 443-5684 during the off-season.
