About NewhalemDerived from a Native American word meaning “goat snare,” Newhalem is a company town of frame houses and well-tended yards built to house employees of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Complex. The Skagit Information Center on SR 20 has displays and interpretive material on the Skagit River project and area recreational opportunities.

Nearby is a 1926 Baldwin steam locomotive that operated on the Seattle City Light Railway. Also of interest are the Trail of the Cedars nature walk and Ladder Creek Falls and Rock Garden, where summer evening illumination makes for a pleasant stroll. The North Cascades National Park Complex Visitor Center is just west of town across the Skagit River.
