About WillistonWilliston began as a railroad town, although the establishment of the Fort Union Trading Post made this area a trading center long before the coming of the railroad. Like nearby Watford City, Williston lies within the oil-rich Bakken formation, and oil exploration and production is a recent—as well as productive—economic venture.
Lewis and Clark State Park (), 16 miles east of the city via SR 1804, is a popular recreation area on Lake Sakakawea that features an 18-hole golf course, a campground and picnicking areas. Williston also is the northern gateway to a scenic portion of US 85, a stretch of highway extending south 71 miles through the western North Dakota badlands to Grassy Butte.
