Aberconwy House
Castle St, Conwy, Wales
Aberconwy House is the only surviving medieval merchant's house in Conwy. It has had many uses over the years, including a hotel and antique shop. It’s now a secondhand bookshop with flexible space for community events on the upper floors. The building’s two lower stone floors support the projecting upper floor, which extends over the lower section on corbel stones.
The basics
Originally a 14th-century merchant's house, the Aberconwy House had been used as a living quarters and workspace. Until recently, it was a museum, but now, the historic site is a bookshop and community space. Stop by the secondhand bookshop while sightseeing in Conwy. It’s near other popular attractions, including The Smallest House in Great Britain and Conwy Castle (Castell Conwy). The hop-on hop-off bus tour in Llandudno passes by the Aberconwy House.
Things to know before you go
Dogs are welcome in the bookshop.
There are four steps down into the bookshop. There is no access ramp, and the property is not suitable for people who use wheelchairs.
The shop accepts book donations.
How to get there
Aberconwy House is located in the center of Conwy, on the corner of Castle and High streets, about a block from the riverfront. Buses regularly run through Conwy, with several stops nearby, and the train station is a short walk from the shop. The entrance is just below ground level.
When to get there
The secondhand bookshop in Aberconwy House is open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from midmorning to midafternoon. The sunniest and driest days in Wales are usually from May to August, making those months good for exploring outdoors. Because this is a busy time in Conwy, expect lodging rates to be higher.
Conwy Quay
Situated along the North Wales coast, Conwy Quay is about a block away from the Aberconwy House and close to other major attractions. The area is a popular sightseeing spot. Wander around, and you’ll find plenty of pubs and eateries to try authentic fish and chips and other Welsh fare.
