Adiyogi Shiva Statue

Booluvampatti, Tamil Nadu, India, 641109

Measuring 112 feet (34 meters) tall, the Adiyogi Shiva Statue on the outskirts of Coimbatore is, according to Guinness World Records, the largest bust sculpture in the world. It was designed and commissioned by Sadhguru, a famous spiritual leader who heads up the Isha Foundation.

The basics

The Adiyogi Shiva Statue, on the grounds of the Isha Yoga Center, has become a major draw for visitors since it was inaugurated in 2017. Tours to the center include plenty of time to see the statue, and typically include round-trip transportation from Coimbatore; most tours also provide time to visit the Dhyanalinga and other meditation spaces at the center.

Things to know before you go

  • The Adiyogi Shiva Statue is a must-see for fans of art and those interested in spirituality.

  • There is no admission fee to visit the statue and the surrounding complex.

  • It’s polite to dress modestly when visiting the statue. You'll also need to remove footwear before approaching it.

How to get there

The Adiyogi Shiva Statue is located at the Isha Yoga Center, about 19 miles (30 kilometers) west of central Coimbatore in the Velliangiri Foothills, not far from the Kerala border. Regular bus service connects the center with Coimbatore. You can also take a taxi or join a tour that includes pickup and drop-off from your hotel.

When to get there

The statue is open to visitors daily throughout the year. Concerts are held in front of the statue every night of the full moon, when visiting hours are extended. Come for the annual Shivratri celebrations, which usually take place in February (depending on the Hindu calendar) for an entire night of worship.

Visiting the Isha Yoga Center

While you’re at the Isha Yoga Center, make sure to pay a visit to the spherical Dhyanalinga meditation hall, which contains a Shiva lingam, and the Spanda Hall, another meditation area that features a huge mural depiction of Shiva. The center also houses two Teerthakunds (sacred tanks of water). Followers believe that taking a dip in these waters can help balance them, both spiritually and mentally.
