Afandou Beach

Afantou, Rhodes, 851 03

Claiming the title of Rhodes’ longest stretch of sand is sun-soaked Afandou Beach, which stretches for 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) along the northeast coast. One of the island’s most popular beaches, the Blue Flag–awarded Afandou features a sand-and-pebble beach, calm shallow waters, and shaded alcoves lined with palm trees.

The Basics

At Afandou, you’ll find everything you need for a day at the beach. Sun beds and umbrellas line the main stretch, served by several waterfront restaurants, snack kiosks, fish tavernas, and beach bars. The area is also a burgeoning hot spot for windsurfing and water sports.

Day cruises along the coast of Rhodes often stop at the beach for the chance to swim and snorkel near its rock formations. However, travelers who’d rather explore at their own pace can rent a boat to explore Afandou and other island beaches, including Kokkini Ammos and Anthony Quinn.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Afandou Beach is a must-visit for families, water-sports enthusiasts, and sun seekers.

  • Don’t forget to pack a towel, swimsuit, and change of clothes.

  • Showering facilities and restrooms are available at the beach.

  • There are plenty of places to get snacks and drinks and Afandou Beach, so don't worry about bringing your own.

How to Get There

Afandou lies 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Rhodes town. The easiest way to get there is to drive or take a taxi. Parking is available near the beach.

When to Get There

The best season to enjoy the beach is during early fall, when temperatures are still warm enough for swimming, rain is unlikely, and the beach isn’t overly crowded. Even in summer high season, though, there’s usually room enough to spread out.

The Village of Afandou

If you can tear yourself away from the sun and sand, consider paying a visit to the village of Afandou, one of the biggest settlements on Rhodes. Set within close proximity to both Afandou and Faliraki beaches, the village has a main square where you’ll find restaurants, shops, cafés, and tavernas, as well as a hilltop church with excellent sea views.
