Aigues-Mortes Tower and Walls
Place Anatole France, Aigues-Mortes, France, 30220
The sprawling sand-colored fortress around the old town of Aigues-Mortes is the Camargue region’s standout historical site. Built as a 13th-century defensive fortress at the behest of King Louis IV, the monument remains remarkably intact and well-maintained. Visitors today can scale the ramparts, walk the walls, and head up the spiral staircase inside Constance’s Tower.
The basics
The Aigues-Mortes towers and walls are the town's must-see historical attraction. There aren’t many walking tours, but you can pay for an audio tour of the towers and walls (in languages including French, English, Italian, and German) with your admission. You can book your entry in advance online or pay to enter on the day. Book a 1.5-hour guided tour of the Tower of Constance directly with the monument for a deeper historical look.
Things to know before you go
Scaling the ramparts and walking the walls takes around an hour. Plan to linger longer if you follow the audio tour.
The attraction works well for spontaneous visits as paying to enter at the door is easy.
Customers who have booked entry online should download or print their tickets in advance, as Wi-Fi is sometimes difficult to access at the monument.
All children under 18 and European Union residents between 18 and 25 can enter for free; identification cards are required.
Disabled visitors and their caretakers can enter for free. Adapted-visit routes are available; discussing specific requirements with the monument staff in advance is best.
How to get there
The Aigues-Mortes Towers and Walls are easy to find in the middle of the old town. Drivers can park outside the medieval city walls and walk into the old town. Car-free travelers can take the train to Gare de Aigues-Mort and walk for roughly five minutes to the attraction.
When to get there
The site is open year-round, with some closures for key French vacation dates: January 1, May 1, November 1 and 11, and December 25. Between May and August, travelers can enter from mid-morning until early evening each day; in the low season, admissions finish in late afternoon, and customers will find the ticket office closed for an hour at lunchtime.
Petit Train d’Aigues-Mortes
For external views of the walls and towers, visitors can take the town’s mini-train for a ride that lasts around half an hour. As well as seeing some picture-perfect views, you’ll get the lowdown on the town’s history and hear interesting snippets about the ancient gates as the train passes back and forth.
