Al Ain Oasis

Spread out across 3,000 acres (1,200 hectares), Al Ain Oasis is the largest green space in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and offers a respite from the city’s crowds and heat. The oasis maintains its evergreen appearance year round with the help of wells and falaj—a traditional, underground irrigation system used throughout the country.
The Basics
The Al Ain Oasis was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 and was opened to the public shortly after. Wander through the extensive shaded pathways, lined by some 147,000 date palms, and explore the various sections of manicured gardens that sit along the main “Oasiscape” walking path. Relax in curated greenspaces, and visit the Eco-Centre, which is full of immersive and educational exhibits focused on the oasis’ traditions, technology, and future.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and give yourself plenty of time to explore the Al Ain Oasis.

How to Get There
The oasis is located in Al Mutaw’ah, Al Ain, roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of the center of Abu Dhabi. You can drive from the center of the city by taking Al Ain Rd/E22 east for about 90 minutes. You can also book a guided day trip to Al Ain that includes round-trip transportation.
When to Get There
The Al Ain Oasis is open daily from morning until early evening, but is only open on certain days, with shortened hours, during Ramadan. Restaurants, cafes, and shops are open daily from noon until late in the evening.
Al Ain Palace Museum
Located next to the oasis, the Al Ain Palace Museum is a restored fort and an excellent example of 1930s Bedouin-style architecture. The free museum offers visitors a glimpse into the daily life of the late Sheikh Zayed, the former ruler of Abu Dhabi who lived here with his family prior to 1966. The museum also hosts a variety of cultural programs throughout the year.
