Al Badiyah Mosque
Al Bidyah, Fujairah, United Arab Emirates
Located in the coastal village of Al Bidya, Al Badiyah Mosque (Al Bidyah Mosque) is the oldest standing mosque in the United Arab Emirates. Constructed of stone and mud, it features an unusual design of four irregular-shaped and layered domes. Thought to date from the 1400s, it remains a functioning mosque to this day.
The basics
Located on a hillside, the small mosque features an irregular square shape, with one central pillar supporting all four domes. The prayer hall features arches, niches for books and decoration, small windows for ventilation and light, intricate carvings, and a Minbar and Mihrab facing Mecca. Both Muslims and non-Muslims are allowed to visit the mosque. The mosque can be visited independently and features on several of the eastern coast of the UAE.
Things to know before you go
Visitors should dress conservatively (long pants or skirts with sleeves, with headscarves for women) and remove their shoes when visiting the mosque.
Headscarves and abayas can be borrowed from the mosque for visits.
The mosque is an active place of worship, and visitors should be respectful.
Restrooms are available next to the mosque.
How to get there
The mosque is located just north of Badiyah village, around 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of Khor Fakkan and 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Fujairah. It’s best to go by car, taxi, or to hire a car and driver. There is a small parking area onsite. Some tours of the east coast of the UAE include a stop at the mosque and transfers from Fujairah or Dubai.
When to get there
The Al Badiyah Mosque is open for daily prayers. There are no set times for visitors, though visitors are not allowed inside when worshipers gather for prayer. The mosque is small and won’t take long to see, though visitors should leave more time to explore the nearby archeological sites.
Archeological sites nearby
Near the Al Badiyah Mosque are several archeological sites, including several watchtowers on the hillside above the mosque, which offer sweeping views over the area. Additional sites include stone walls from old buildings, the foundations and walls of large historic houses and smaller houses, petroglyphs, and archeological carvings.
