Al Bithnah Fort
Al Bithnah, Fujairah, United Arab Emirates
Located in Wadi Ham, west of Fujairah, Al Bithnah Fort is one of the oldest forts in the United Arab Emirates. Built in 1735 in response to tribal clashes, it played a crucial role in defending the important inland route to Fujairah. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, the fort was most recently restored and opened to the public in 2012.
The basics
The fort, built out of stone, brick, adobe, and wood planking, is rectangular, with two round corner towers. Visitors can explore inside the fort and enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding countryside and mountains. The on-site guard sometimes offers tours of the fort. Visit independently or as part of a guided tour from Fujairah or Dubai, which includes other attractions on the eastern coast of the UAE.
Things to know before you go
Al Bithnah Fort is ideal for history buffs and visitors looking to escape the modern cities of the UAE.
It’s free to enter the fort and to park nearby.
There is limited shade, so wear sunscreen and bring lots of water.
The road to the fort is rough, so it’s best to go in a four-wheel drive vehicle.
How to get there
Al Bithnah Fort is located in the village of Al Buthna, around 8 miles (13 kilometers) west of Fujairah. There are no public transportation options, so you must go by car or hire a car and driver. Some tours of the east coast of the UAE include a stop at the fort and transfers from Fujairah or Dubai.
When to get there
Al Bithnah Fort is open daily from 8am to 4pm. On Fridays, hours are usually more limited. It’s best to visit the fort in the early morning before it gets too hot. Plan to spend around 30 to 60 minutes exploring the fort. Allow yourself more time if you plan to hike the nature trail as well.
Al Bithnah Nature & Heritage Hiking Trail
Opened in 2021 for the UAE’s 50th anniversary, the trail is the 50th nature trail in the Emirate. It includes the Al Bithnah Fort and features an easy and well-marked trail that goes past several watchtowers that were also built when the fort was built. More advanced hikers have the option to continue up the slopes of the mountain for a longer hike.
