Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque (Dubai Blue Mosque)

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Embellished with thousands of Turkish iznik tiles and elaborate red and gold carpets, Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque—often referred to simply as the “Dubai Blue Mosque”—is an homage to the famous Blue Mosque in Istanbul. The Ottoman influence can be seen throughout this architectural landmark, from its four towering minarets to its impressive 21 domes.

The basics

Non-Muslims are welcome to visit the Blue Mosque outside of prayer times, and official guided tours are offered, providing insight into the mosque’s unique architecture and Islamic decorations, as well as its role in Muslim life and the teachings of Islam. Many Dubai sightseeing tours include a visit to the mosque, often in conjunction with other attractions such as the Gold and Spice Souks, Burj Al Arab, and the Dubai Frame.

Things to know before you go

The mosque is free to visit. Free guided tours are offered twice daily and take between 45 minutes and an hour. Non-Muslims should dress appropriately, with loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing covering the arms and legs. Shoes must be removed, and women must cover their hair. The mosque is partly accessible for wheelchairs and those with limited mobility.

How to get there

Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque is in the Al Safa 1 district, about a 10-minute drive from Jumeirah Beach. The closest metro station is Business Bay Metro Station, about a 15-minute walk away, but most visitors arrive by taxi or as part of a guided city tour.

When to get there

The mosque is only open to non-Muslims during visiting hours, typically Monday to Friday from 10am to 11am, and from 2:15pm to 5pm. There are guided tours offered twice daily, in the morning and afternoon.

Visiting Dubai’s many mosques

Dubai is home to more than 2,000 mosques, but a handful of them are also architectural sights and tourist attractions in their own right. Admire the pastel-colored Jumeirah Mosque while visiting nearby Jumeirah Beach; marvel at the Grand Mosque, with its 54 domes and 230-foot (70-meter) high minaret; or spot the Masjid Al Rahim (closed to non-worshippers) along Dubai Marina Walk.
