Al-Hajar Mountains

The basics

The steep slopes of the region run parallel to the coast of the Gulf of Oman and include points of interest such as Misfat Al-Abriyeen. This unique town consists of mud-brick homes and terraces that hug the cliffs above. Jebel Akhdar (or Green Mountain) is another interesting destination with pomegranate trees and fields of roses, which are used to make rose water. While you’re there, check out the old capital cities of Nizwa and Rustaq and their impressive fortresses, or Wadi Nakhr canyon for hikes in a scenic setting.

Things to know before you go

• Make sure to respect social customs and dress appropriately.
• If you plan on hiking, bring plenty of water and food, plus a good camera.
• It can be very hot in the Al-Hajar Mountains, so be sure to wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.

How to get there

The Al-Hajar Mountains make up a large region in northern Oman, and many cities can be accessed after landing at Muscat International Airport. However, for more remote and rugged locales, consider driving a reliable 4WD to your destination.

When to get there

For cooler, pleasant weather, consider visiting Al-Hajar from December through May. And to see the colorful rose blooms in Jebel Akhdar head to the city in April.
