With its cylindrical turrets and chunky doors, the 18th-century Al Hazm Castle could have been plucked from an illustrated Arabian adventure book. Rising from plains beneath Oman’s Al Hajar Mountains, the castle, with its rich history and well-maintained interiors, is one of the country’s most impressive forts.
The basics
Al Hazm Castle—sometimes called Al Hazm Fort—is one of Oman’s best-kept secrets. Often overlooked by tourists in favor of the forts at nearby Rustaq and Nakhal, this restored castle is unusual for having served as a fortification and palace for local imam tribal leaders. The castle boasts a unique design of arched roofs supported by columns rather than timber rafters, as well as many furnished rooms, setting it apart from other local forts.
Visitors can explore Al Hazm Castle independently—delving into its rooms, courtyard, and ramparts with an audio guide—or take a private tour from Muscat that stops off at the castle and other fortifications, as well as nearby mountain wadis and hot springs. Other ways to visit Al Hazm include multi-day tours that cover more of Oman’s interior, including mountain towns and the Wahiba Sands desert.

How to get there
Al Hazm Castle stands in Al Hazm village, just north of Rustaq in Oman’s Al Batinah region, around 67 miles (108 kilometers) southwest of Muscat. There’s no public transportation to Al Hazm, so the only access is by taking a cab, joining a private guided tour, or driving there via the Muscat-Al Batinah Expressway.
When to get there
Al Hazm Castle is open Saturday-Thursday from morning to late afternoon, and Fridays for part of the morning. However, it’s important to check the hours in advance, as they may be subject to change. The castle is typically quiet, but it makes sense to visit in the relative cool of morning.

Built in 1708 by the Yaruba tribe’s Imam Sultan bin Saif II, Al Hazm is more decorative than many of Oman’s forts, and holds a number of rooms refurnished in 18th-century style. High points include its antique cannons, original kitchen, food stores, living quarters, and religious classroom, along with several secret passageways. Take time to admire its heavily carved and studded wooden doors—each one is a work of art.
