Ala-Too Square

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Originally built to celebrate six decades of Soviet rule, this sprawling public square is now a symbol of modern Kyrgyzstan. The Lenin statue that once stood here has been replaced by Manas, the legendary Kygyz national hero. Today, Ala Too Square—the name refers to mountains in Kyrgyz—is a site for gatherings, performances, and the occasional protest.

The basics

Kyrgyzstan is a country better known for its nature than its monuments, but Ala-Too square is a landmark that shouldn’t be missed. Along with its iconic Manas statue, the square is home to an Eternal Flame Memorial and the Kyrgyz national flag (the largest flagpole in the country), where visitors can catch a ceremonial Changing of the Guard. The State History Museum, which showcases Kyrgyzstan’s millennia-old history, is also located here. Many walking tours that explore Bishkek include a stop at the square, as well as visiting sights such as Kyrgyz State Philharmonic Hall and Victory Hall.

Things to know before you go

  • Ala-Too Square offers great photo opportunities—especially if the snow-capped Tian-Shan mountains are visible on clear days.
  • There are benches for anyone who needs a rest.
  • There’s little shade to be found, so bring a hat and sunscreen if visiting in summer.
  • Restaurants, cafés, and eateries are located nearby.
  • There are no restrooms in the square itself, but you can find facilities in either museums or nearby places to eat.

How to get there

Ala-Too Square is centrally located in Bishkek’s bustling downtown. If you’re staying in a hotel nearby, then chances are you can reach the public square easily on foot. Otherwise, taxis and rideshare apps are abundant in the city. Anyone on the more adventurous side can flag down a marshrutka (shared minibus), and get off either at Ala-Too Square or nearby Chuy Avenue.

When to get there

If you’re looking to have the square to yourself, then aim for an early weekday morning. The square is at its most lively from May to September, when Ala-Too frequently pays host to festivals, outdoor concerts, and pop-up markets. To see Bishkek at its most festive, plan a trip to coincide with the annual celebrations for Kyrgyz Independence Day on August 31st, or Victory Day on May 9th. The Changing of the Guard typically takes place hourly.

What to see at Bishkek’s State History Museum

No visit to Ala-Too Square is complete without popping into the State History Museum. Don’t let the dry-sounding name fool you; this eye-catching museum is a treasure trove of artifacts from all around Kyrgyzstan. See traditional handicrafts, musical instruments, yurts, and other exhibits on nomadic culture, plus an entire floor devoted to Soviet history. Come at the start of your vacation to orient yourself before setting out from the capital.
