Alghero Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria)

Alghero, Sardinia

Alghero is known for its eclectic Spanish-influenced architecture, and Alghero Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria) is one of the city’s most striking examples. The Gothic-Catalan cathedral features a soaring bell tower piercing the sky above the old town, elegant main portal, and elaborate marble pulpit and altar.

The basics

The unique blend of Catalan-Gothic, Renaissance, and neoclassical elements make the Alghero Cathedral an architectural standout, and most city sightseeing tours include a stop here to admire its bell tower, portal, and interior naves. Alternatively, visit the cathedral independently before or after a boat tour of Alghero’s coastline to Porto Conte and Capo Caccia along the Coral Riviera. The unique octagonal bell tower rises far above the rooftops, one of the most distinctive features of Alghero’s cityscape, which is best admired by sea.

Things to know before you go

  • City walking tours that stop here can cover a lot of ground: comfortable shoes are recommended, plus a hat and sunscreen in the summer.
  • The cathedral is an active place of worship, so wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees and take care not to disturb any services.
  • Architecture enthusiasts will enjoy picking out the hodgepodge of styles used to build the cathedral over three centuries.
  • The cathedral is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

Alghero Cathedral sits in the heart of the city’s old town and is easy to reach from most attractions on foot. Visit as part of a city walking tour or independently; the cathedral is around a 5-minute walk from the ferry port or main Piazzale della Pace parking area.

When to get there

Alghero Cathedral is open daily and visitors are allowed to enter during service, but take care not to disturb worshippers. The interiors of the church stay relatively cool all day long, so pop in during the scorching midday hours to admire the architecture while enjoying a respite from the heat.

Climbing the Alghero Cathedral bell tower

The Alghero Cathedral’s 16th-century bell tower rises high above this seaside city, offering 360° views from atop its octagonal height. Access the tower via a Gothic doorway on Via Principe Umberto, pay your €3 admission, and head up the winding staircase to the observation platform next to the bells to take in the panorama. The tower is closed on Wednesdays, Sundays, and during the midday lunch break; for the best views, climb up at sunset.
