Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary

The Basics

The sanctuary is a safe haven for animals who have been kept in captivity, suffered injuries, or been orphaned in the wild. A tour of the facilities reveals spider monkeys, parrots, toucans, raptors, porcupines, sloths, and anteaters. During sanctuary tours, guides tend to share personal stories of the animals, their lifecycle, and the importance of conservation.

• The sanctuary does not allow visitors to touch the animals.

How to Get There

The sanctuary is located off the main coastal road (Route 34) between the popular beach towns of Dominical and Uvita. From Dominical, head south on Route 34 for 4 miles (6 kilometers) and turn left on Calle San Martin Norte.

When to Get There

The sanctuary is open to the public Tuesday–Sunday from 9am–4:30pm, and tours are offered at 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. You can enjoy lunch at the sanctuary following the 11am tour, before or after the 1pm tour, and before the 3pm tour. Visit at the end of the day to have dinner at the adjacent restaurant and watch the sunset from the deck.

Best Beaches near the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary

Due to its prime location on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is a short drive from some white-sand beaches and world-class surf spots. Just to the north, you’ll find the tranquil Dominicalito Beach—ideal for beginner surfers and families. Continue on to Dominical Beach to find bigger waves and a shore lined with surf schools. Or, head south of the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary for snorkeling, swimming, and surfing opportunities at Hermosa Beach.
