American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

200 Water St., Yorktown, Virginia

Located in Yorktown, Virginia—the site of the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War—the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown dives into early US history. The two-part museum offers a sweeping, multimedia exhibition space with hundreds of artifacts, as well as an immersive living history area.

At the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, visitors can step back in time to America’s colonial era and learn all about the founding of the country. Its galleries tell the story of the war against the British Empire—and feature rare objects like a July 1776 broadside of the Declaration of Independence—while its film screenings (including “The Siege of Yorktown,” shown on a 180-degree surround screen with special effects) cater to visitors of all ages. Outside, costumed actors in two living history environments—one a Revolution-era farm, one a Continental Army encampment—feature daily demonstrations and immerse visitors in this period of time.

Yorktown is part of America’s Historic Triangle, which also includes Jamestown and Williamsburg. The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown can be visited on numerous tours, as a one-off or in combination with attractions like the Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg.

  • Kids between the ages of 6 and 12 receive discounted entry to the museum, while those ages 5 and under can visit for free. Local residents also receive free entry.

  • During the summer high season, the museum operates a café serving pizza, burgers, soup, and other snacks.

  • If you’re looking to pick up a souvenir, head to the museum’s on-site gift shop.

  • The bulk of the museum is accessible to visitors with disabilities, though some outdoor areas may be difficult to access for travelers using wheelchairs.

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is located at 200 Water Street in Yorktown, Virginia, just on the edge of Yorktown and near the Yorktown Battlefield. If driving, take Route 1020; free parking is offered on-site.

The museum is open every day (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) from morning until early evening. It’s recommended to allow three to four hours for your visit. The museum is particularly popular during the summer and school holidays; visit during the off-season to bypass the crowds.

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown’s sister site, the Jamestown Settlement, is located 18 miles (29 kilometers) west of the museum. A museum of 17th-century Virginia history, the Jamestown Settlement offers exhibition spaces and living history areas that capture the earliest days of American history. Combination passes offer a discounted way to explore both sites.
