American River
American River, Kangaroo Island, South Australia, 5221
Despite its name, American River is a town on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island (not, actually, a river). Set in a sheltered harbor between the ocean and Pelican Lagoon, the location attracts yachties and fishing vessels with its calm waters. For travelers, it’s primarily a base for birdwatching in Pelican Lagoon and exploring further afield on Kangaroo Island.
The basics
American River’s proximity to the tranquil Pelican Lagoon draws visitors who want to birdwatch and kayak in the lagoon. The town is surrounded by bush and there are often great views back to the Australian mainland. Seafood is big business around here (especially oysters), so there are plenty of places to have a freshly caught and cooked meal. Travelers typically visit Kangaroo Island on overnight or multi-day trips from Adelaide, and stop at American River while staying on the island.
Things to know before you go
Look out for the beautiful Red Tailed Glossy Black Cockatoos while walking around American River, one of the many species that live here.
Get active on a 5-mile (8-kilometer) coastal walk. Head east from the Mercure Lodge on the water’s edge to the old Cannery Works at Ballast Head.
Keep in mind that the picturesque jetty at American River is a working jetty, so take care if choosing to swim.
How to get there
American River is on the western side of Kangaroo Island’s Eastern Cove. Ferries from the Australian mainland arrive at Penneshaw, which is about a 45-minute drive from American River. Follow Hog Bay Road until you reach the turnoff to American River Road. Unless you’re on a guided tour, you’ll need your own vehicle to get around Kangaroo Island.
When to get there
Summer is the most popular time to visit Kangaroo Island, when the weather is warm but generally not as hot as some parts of nearby mainland Australia. To avoid the busiest crowds, avoid the Australian school holiday period, between mid-to-late December and late January.
Climb Prospect Hill
Active travelers might want to burn off that indulgent American River seafood meal with a hike up nearby Prospect Hill, the highest point on the island. Climb the 500 steps up the summit to enjoy the panoramic views of the island, including American River and Pelican Lagoon.
