The Ancient City of Pingyao is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in China, dating back to the Zhou Dynasty, and rebuilt in 1370. Over the centuries, it served as a financial center during different dynasties, kind of like the Qing Dynasty’s Wall Street. The architecture here dates to Imperial China, and there are photo opportunities at every turn in this UNESCO-protected ancient city.
The basics
You can either tour the Ancient City of Pingyao on your own, but it’s worth it to go on a guided tour. There is so much history here, and details you could miss if you didn’t have a trained guide. Walk through the city’s restored streets, explore the traditional courtyards, and hear stories of the layers of history and culture that have taken place in this city. Often, day tours of the Ancient City of Pingyao also stop at the Qiao’s Family Compound and Shuanglin Temple.
Things to know before you go
Make sure to take a walk on the ancient city walls for awesome views if the city below.
Try the special vinegar in Shanxi, especially to dip local dumplings into.
Stay for the evening and try your KTV, or karaoke, skills at a nearby karaoke bar.
How to get there
No matter where you’re coming from, there’s probably a bullet train or a long-distance bus that can take you to the Ancient City of Pingyao. It’s about a 4-hour train ride from Beijing, three hours from Xian and Datong, and one hour from Pingyao. Buses will take longer since they have to deal with traffic. While inside the city, you can take local buses, ride bikes, or walk.
When to get there
Spring and fall are the best times to visit Pingyao Ancient City, since you’ll be walking outside, and the weather is best during those seasons. Summer is a fine time to visit, but it will be hot and is also the prime tourist season. Winter is a bit cold, but if you’re prepared, then it is a good time to visit since you’ll most likely see fewer tourists.
Make a visit to Mt. Mian (Mianshan)
Not far from Pingyao Ancient City is Mt. Mian, or Mianshan, which is worth a visit. There is an impressive architectural feat with its walkway carved right into the side of the mountain. Plus you can visit Yunfeng Temple and the Temple of All-Embracing Heaven. Make sure your cameras are charged for some excellent photo opportunities.
