Ancient Kamiros
Kameiros, Rhodes, 851 06
The ancient city of Kamiros stretches along the northwest coast of Rhodes. Once among the most prominent cities in the Dodecanese Islands, it thrived off local figs, wine, and oil production. The Hellenistic ruins of Kamiros, including the remains of the agora, temple, and reservoir, were rediscovered in 1929.
The Basics
Wandering through the ruins of ancient Kamiros, it’s possible to envision the grandeur of the former city. Built on three levels, it was once crowned by a hilltop acropolis with spectacular views along the coastline, while the lower levels housed a Hellenistic temple, Doric fountain house, agora, and Peribolos of the Altars. The remains of Kamiros are one of the most important historical sites on the island, along with the acropolises of Rhodes and Lindos. Explore the site on your own or as part of a guided hike from Mount Profitis Ilias.
