Ancona Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Ciriaco)

Piazzale del Duomo 9, Ancona, Italy, 60121

Guarded by its pair of pink marble lions flanking the ornately carved main portal, the Ancona Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Ciriaco) is both an architectural gem and one of the most panoramic spots in the city. Climb Guasco Hill to admire its mix of Byzantine, Gothic, and Romanesque details, and take in sweeping vistas across the rooftops of Ancona to the Adriatic Sea below.

The basics

The cathedral is one of Ancona’s most important cultural attractions and a highlight of city sightseeing tours on foot or by e-bike. Most guided tours pair a visit to this medieval church with other top sights, such as the Roman amphitheater and Arch of Trajan, Church of Santa Maria della Piazza, and the Mole Vanvitelliana. You can also visit the cathedral on your own after exploring the coastline by boat or joining a foodie adventure, from a wine tour to a cooking class or home-cooked meal with a local host.

Things to know before you go

  • The cathedral is one of the most important places of worship in Ancona, so dress modestly when visiting.

  • Charge your camera battery before heading to the cathedral, so you’re ready to capture its beautiful architecture and the surrounding views.

  • The church is free to enter and there is also a small garden with benches around the church that is open to the public.

  • Bring water and wear a hat and sunscreen if you’re making the climb to the hilltop church in the summer.

  • The church is accessible to wheelchairs via a ramp on the side entrance.

How to get there

The Ancona Cathedral sits at the top of Guasco Hill, and there is a relatively steep climb on foot from the city center to reach the entrance. Part of the climb is covered by a public elevator, but you’ll still need to go up the final stretch of the hill. Alternatively, you can reach the church entrance by taxi, local bus, or rental car; there is a small parking area opposite the church.

When to get there

The church is open daily, though it closes in the early afternoon for lunch from October to April. Visitors may enter during Mass, but photography is prohibited while religious services are taking place, and tourists must refrain from speaking. Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best light for photographs.

Highlights of the Ancona Cathedral

This church’s medieval architecture is the star of the show. The 13th-century portal, with its carved columns and twin lions, is one of the the most striking elements of the cathedral, along with its Gothic dome and Renaissance choir. While the interiors are almost devoid of artwork, there are a few pieces to see, such as Piero della Francesca’s Marriage of the Virgin in the Chapel of the Sacrament and the votive painting of Maria di San Ciriaco, said to have miraculous powers.
