The basics
There are multiple ways to experience the trail. For an easier hike, take the 3.7-mile (6-kilometer) Angel Rocks Loop Trail from the trailhead and back again. Or, follow the Angel Rocks to Chena Hot Springs route for a challenging trek that runs 8.3 miles (13.4 kilometers) one way. While you can hike the trail independently, those interested in learning more about the area and local flora and fauna can sign up for a guided tour that includes transportation from Fairbanks and a stop at Chena Hot Springs.
Things to know before you go
The Angel Rocks Trail is considered moderate to strenuous, with an elevation gain of 1,900 feet (579 meters).
The Angel Rocks Loop Trail takes an estimated 3–4 hours to hike, depending on your skill level.
Wear solid footwear and make sure to wear layers, even in the summer.
Horseback riding is allowed on the trail.
Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way, including moose and bears.
How to get there
The Angel Rocks Trail is located in the Chena River State Recreation Area, about an hour's drive from the heart of Fairbanks and approximately 10 minutes by car from Chena Hot Springs. If you don't have a rental car, then you'll need to book a guided tour from Fairbanks that includes transportation.
When to get there
The best time to hike the trail is during the summer months, when the weather is at its warmest and there's not much chance of snow. Another benefit of coming during this time is that there's lots of daylight, which means you can easily hike the trail from early in the morning until late at night.

At the end of the Angel Rocks Trail, Chena Hot Springs Resort offers a large outdoor thermal pool with waterfall features. It’s also home to the Aurora Ice Museum, which features illuminated ice sculptures and a bar where you can drink cocktails and mocktails from glasses made of ice. While many people stay the night, guest passes are available for those who just want to visit the springs and/or tour the ice museum.
