POINT OF INTEREST

Angelmo

Angelmo, Puerto Montt, Los Lagos

A few minutes west of Puerto Montt’s center, Angelmó is famous for its craft and fish markets. The colorful, bustling markets are crammed with vendors, making it a popular spot for visitors to stroll along the waterfront, browse for souvenirs, and grab a fresh seafood meal. It’s touristy but well worth a visit while in Puerto Montt.

The basics

At the handicraft market, you can find a variety of items made from the Chilean Lake District’s native alerce trees, as well as various other handmade items. You can also sample Licor de Oro, a thick, sweet, and strong liquor made of aguardiente and whey on nearby Chiloe. The fish market sells fresh catches brought in from the fishing boats, and the surrounding restaurants, which hover over the water on stilts, serve up the catch of the day.

Sightseeing tours of Puerto Montt often include a visit to Angelmó.

Things to know before you go

  • Haggling over prices at the handicraft market is expected.

  • Most vendors accept credit cards.

  • Wildlife lovers should keep an eye out for sea lions, which are often spotted in the water.

How to get there

Angelmó is just under 2 miles (3 kilometers) west of downtown Puerto Montt. It’s less than a 10-minute drive, or a walk of around 30 minutes, along Diego Portables/Route 7. Numerous and frequent public buses and colectivos can also get you there.

When to get there

Angelmó’s fish and crafts markets, as well as its restaurants, are open all year round, from morning until early evening, with extended opening hours in the summer. The best time to visit is in the morning when you can see the fishing boats coming in with fresh catches.

Tenglo Island

Tenglo Island (Isla Tengo) lies across the Reloncaví Sound from Angelmó. Boatmen offer their services at a small berth at the market’s entrance, and the crossing takes less than 10 minutes. Several hiking trails cross the small island, one of which leads to a viewpoint that offers views of the Osorno, Puntiagudo, and Calbuco volcanoes and the Puerto Montt skyline.
