Archaeological Crypt of the Île de la Cité

7 Parvis Notre-Dame, Place Jean-Paul II, Paris, Île-de-France, 75004

Hidden under Notre-Dame Cathedral’s square, the Archaeological Crypt of the Île de la Cité is a fascinating descent into more than 2,000 years of Paris history. Excavated during the 1960s and 1970s, the crypt reveals the city’s architectural layers, from the ruins of the Gallo-Roman town of Lutetia, the predecessor of present-day Paris, to major developments in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The basics

The Archeological Crypt of the Île de la Cité (Crypte Archéologique de L'île de la Cité) offers different itineraries to see ruins including 3rd-century homes, a 4th-century bathhouse, and the ancient port on the River Seine, as well as the remains of a two-story, 12th-century home, an 18th-century hospital, and shops built along the rue Neuve-Notre-Dame in the second half of the 12th century. With a Paris Museum Pass or a hop-on, hop-off bus tour that includes entry to the site, you can skip the line for tickets.

Things to know before you go

  • Multimedia exhibits inside the crypt guide visitors through centuries of Parisian history, as well as the construction of Notre Dame Cathedral.
  • To best appreciate the ruins inside the crypt, rent a 30-minute audio guide (available in English and a number of other languages).
  • There are no restrooms or lockers.
  • The crypt is wheelchair accessible.
  • Check the website for mask requirements.

How to get there

The Archeological Crypt is beneath the square in front of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, and is accessible via metro line 4 (Cité ou Saint-Michel stop), the RER train (Saint-Michel Notre-Dame stop), or a number of city bus lines.

When to get there

The archaeological site is open Tuesday–Sunday (with closures on a few holidays), and can be visited in less than an hour, offering a nice break from the crowds and heat on street level during the summer months. Pair your visit with a tour of the top sights on Île de la Cité, including the Cathedral of Notre Dame and Pont Neuf.

Paris’ Iconic Cathedral

The Notre Dame Cathedral (Cathédrale de Notre Dame de Paris), a masterpiece of medieval architecture, has long been one of the top sights in the city. As a massive restoration is still underway following the 2019 fire, it's scheduled to reopen in December 2024. The cathedral square and the crypt are open to visitors.

Ways to explore

Tickets for the Archaeological Crypt of the Île de la Cité are included in the Paris Museum Pass, and online booking options include a self-guided tour with an audio guide. But many travelers opt for a tour that visits Notre-Dame, too; for extra insights, you can even explore with an archaeologist guide. The crypt hosts a range of exhibitions focusing on archaeology and history, but the stars of the show are the remains of a 4th-century bathhouse and a historic port.

Accessibility

People with disability cards and their companions enjoy free entry. There is elevator access to the crypt, which is partially wheelchair accessible.

Best times to visit

The crypt is open from 10am to 6pm and is usually quietest at the start of the day. It’s best to plan your visit around Notre-Dame Cathedral, which is more in demand.

Best days to visit

The crypt is closed on Mondays and is busiest on weekends and public holidays.

Best months to visit

There’s no bad month to see the crypt, although it’s ideal for a rainy day.
