Archaeological Museum of Tetouan
2 Av. Ben Hssain, Tétouan, Morocco
The Archaeological Museum of Tetouan takes you back over a century, allowing you to explore artifacts, tools, ceramics, and stone inscriptions—some of the pieces are pre-Islamic. Most of the articles are from Northern Morocco and ancient Tetouan, which was destroyed by Romans in a revolt. There’s also an extensive library to explore.
The basics
You can visit the museum on your own or book a tour incorporating a visit to this small museum. Tours often start in the garden with a look at the beautiful mosaics and carry on through the museum to see the themed sections. Often, private or group tours are part of a tour of Tetouan, or they can incorporate other cities, like Chefchaouen and Tangier, for a more extensive exploration of Northern Morocco.
Things to know before you go
Make sure to dress conservatively, as this is a relatively small, traditional Moroccan city.
Bring dirhams to pay the entrance fee unless you’ve booked a tour, in which case your guide will pay.
Guided tours can be helpful as they weave the different historical eras into a more fluid, understandable story.
How to get there
The Archaeological Museum of Tetouan is easy to locate since it’s about a 5-minute walk from the Royal Palace. You can hire small, petit taxis to get you around the city, but be prepared to do some haggling. Morocco’s public transportation system isn’t always easy to navigate, so visitors often hire a car and driver on their trip to the country.
When to get there
The museum is open from around morning until late afternoon daily, except Tuesdays. There’s a small entrance fee that's payable in dirhams. Morocco is welcoming year-round, but temperatures get chilly in winter and hot in summer. It’s more pleasant to travel in spring or fall.
Ramadan
Morocco is predominantly Muslim, and most of its population participates in Ramadan. The holiday dates change yearly, so take note when planning your trip. Visitors are welcome to come for Ramadan, even if they don’t observe. But in big cities like Casablanca, most restaurants are closed, and you can’t eat or drink (in public) until sunset. It’s more relaxed in the more remote areas for tourists.
