Ascensor Concepcion
Esmeralda 916, Valparaiso, Valparaíso
Boasting the title of the city’s oldest elevator, Ascensor Concepcion (sometimes referred to as the Turri Elevator) serves as the gateway to one of Valparaíso’s most charming enclaves—Paseo Gervasoni at the summit of Cerro Concepcion. Formerly run using steam, the elevator is now electric and takes you on a steep and rickety ride up the side of the hill.
The basics
Thanks to its historical significance and charming final destination, Ascensor Concepcion is a staple of sightseeing tours of Valparaíso and its historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tours often combine an elevator ride with top Valparaíso sights such as Plaza Sotomayor and Paseo 21 de Mayo, or a visit to the neighboring coastal town of Viña del Mar.
The entrance to the elevator is close to one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks—Relog Turri (Turri Clock Tower), which dates back to the 1920s.
Things to know before you go
There’s a small fee to ride the elevator, but it’s well worth it. Cash is preferred.
If you’re afraid of heights or have vertigo, you might want to skip this attraction, as the ride can feel a little shaky on the way up.
When you reach Paseo Gervasoni at the top, you’ll find several cafés, restaurants, and hotels.
How to get there
Ascensor Concepcion connects downtown Valparaíso with Paseo Gervasoni at the top of Cerro Concepcion. Ascensor Concepcion is located at 932 Esmeralda, and it’s directly opposite the Reloj Turri clock tower. The nearest bus stop is the Reloj Turri Sur, which is served by numbers 001, 506, 513, 521, and 802.
When to get there
Ascensor Concepcion is open from morning until early evening and runs regularly throughout the day. The elevator usually waits until it's full to depart, rather than operating according to a timetable. During the busy summer months, you might need to wait for a short while before you can board.
Exploring Cerro Concepcion
Often hailed as Valparaíso’s prettiest part, Cerro Concepcion is packed to the rafters with brightly colored buildings, artisan coffee shops, and accommodation options for all budgets. You’ll be able to soak up panoramic vistas of the city and the sea from here, and admire street art reflective of Valpo’s heritage—this is often a hot spot for graffiti tours, and most visitors use this neighborhood as a cultural base for exploration.
