Atomic Bunker Museum

Raudondvario Plentas 164A, Kaunas, Lithuania, 47173

Hidden 20 feet (6 meters) underground and filled with displays of gas masks and antique electronics, the Atomic Bunker Museum in Kaunas transports you to an intense period of Lithuania’s past. This former Soviet bunker now serves as a KGB spy museum aimed at showing visitors what local life was like under secret surveillance.

The basics

After descending into the Atomic Bunker Museum, you will find more than 1,200 unusual items on exhibition, from radiation meters to disguised counter-surveillance equipment. Visits to this private museum are only possible on a 2-hour guided tour given by one of the museum’s staff.

Afterward, return to the city center of Kaunas and head to the Devil Museum for another unorthodox museum experience, or, for a more conventional exhibition, visit the M.K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art, which is dedicated to the famed Lithuanian painter.

Things to know before you go

  • You must make an advance appointment by phone or email to join a tour.

  • Exhibits at the museum appeal to history buffs and also to fans of gadgets, espionage, and spycraft.

  • Stairs and narrow spaces in the museum make it inaccessible for people using wheelchairs or strollers.

How to get there

The Atomic Bunker Museum is located in the Veršvai neighborhood, away from the center of Kaunas. Take the #7 trolleybus from the city center or the #11 trolleybus from the Old Town and travel to the Atrama stop, just down the road from the museum. For drivers, there is off-street parking directly outside the museum.

When to get there

The Atomic Bunker Museum is only open by appointment. As such, the best time to visit the museum will depend on the times that are made available to you. Summer may be the busiest time to visit Lithuania, but even during this popular season, this private museum typically has availability.

Other history museums in Kaunas

The Atomic Bunker Museum, which focuses on Kaunas during the Cold War, is not the only history museum in the city. Learn about Lithuania’s part in the conflicts of the 20th century at the Vytautas the Great War Museum. Or, visit a museum that’s even more niche. Walking into the Museum of the History of Lithuanian Medicine and Pharmacy is like stepping back in time: The museum is set up like an old-fashioned pharmacy.
