Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb

105 Curran St., Westhaven Reserve, Herne Bay, Auckland, Auckland, 1011

The postcard star of Auckland’s skyline, Auckland Harbour Bridge, is an architectural landmark and a vital transport link connecting downtown Auckland with the North Shore. But for the most magnificent views over Waitemata Harbour, driving over the bridge just won’t cut it—instead, join an Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb and walk to the very top of the bridge at 210 feet (64 meters).

The basics

Guided walking tours take thrillseekers along the sky-high walkway at the top of Auckland Harbour Bridge from where the 360-degree panoramic views span Waitemata Harbour, downtown Auckland, the North Shore beaches, and the volcanic island of Rangitoto. Tours take about two hours, during which time you’ll walk up to the top of the bridge’s central arch, securely attached with a safety harness, and climb up to the highest point.

Things to know before you go

  • You must be between 77 pounds (35 kilograms) and 331 pounds (150 kilograms) and have a reasonable fitness level to undertake the Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb.

  • Wear flat, enclosed shoes that are securely fastened and have warm layers, especially in winter. All participants are given Bridge Climb suits and must leave cameras, mobile phones, and other personal items behind when climbing.

  • Children over 7 can also enjoy the Bridge Climb, but adults must accompany those under 14.

How to get there

Auckland Harbour Bridge is found along State Highway 1 between Saint Marys Bay on the Auckland city side to Northcote on the North Shore. Bridge Climb tours set out from 105 Curran Street Extension, Westhaven Marina, at the south end of the bridge. Free parking is available on-site, or you can request a pickup from Auckland Sky Tower.

When to get there

It’s possible to tackle the Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb through all four seasons, although tours may occasionally be canceled due to extreme weather. Climbs run from 9:30am to 4:30pm seven days a week (except on public holidays) and must be booked in advance. For the best views, choose a clear, dry day and early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun.

Auckland for adrenaline junkies

If walking the famous bridge isn’t enough of an adrenaline rush, daredevils have plenty of other options in Auckland. Tackle the city’s only urban bungy jump from Auckland Harbour Bridge, including a 131-foot (40-meter) freefall and an ocean touch finish, where you can dip your hands or head into the water. Alternatively, challenge yourself to a hands-free Skywalk around the top of the Auckland Sky Tower or a 630-foot (192-meter) Skyjump from the top.
