Augsburg Town Hall
Rathausplatz 2, Augsburg, Germany, 86150
This historic landmark in central Augsburg may seem like an unassuming civic center from the outside, but the building is defined by its Golden Hall masterpiece. Head inside and make your way up to the second floor where the double-height ceremonial room awaits, resplendent with its coffered ceiling, murals, and golden doors that befit a grand entrance.
The basics
Admission to the ground floor is free, but there’s a small fee to enter the Golden Hall. You pay when you arrive, and there’s no need to book tickets in advance. Many sightseeing tours of Augsburg include a stop at the town hall, and visiting with a guide gives you the lowdown on the building’s Renaissance and baroque architecture, as well as history that touches on World War II.

How to get there
The town hall is in central Augsburg, about a 15-minute walk from the main train station (Augsburg Hauptbahnhof), or a short tram ride to the Rathausplatz stop. If you’re driving, follow the B300 Friedberger Strasse to the city center. There are plenty of paid parking spaces in the streets nearby, as well as parking lots.
When to get there
Augsburg Town Hall is usually open to visitors every day, from mid-morning until early evening. Note that the hall is occasionally used for official ceremonies and events. When these are held, certain rooms such as the Prince’s Rooms (Fürstenzimmer) and the Golden Hall are closed.
Beyond the Golden Hall
While the Golden Hall is the highlight, don’t miss out on other sites here. The elaborate furnishings in the four different Prince’s Rooms are worth a quick look, though be aware that they’re still being restored after wartime damage. Venture down to the basement to find Augsburg’s archives, which are home to manuscripts, maps, and old photographs of the city, for an interesting snapshot of local history.
